I'm interested in cycling from St James' Park to Elland Road to raise money for charity!

If you’re a keen cyclist looking for your next riding challenge in 2024, we have the ultimate trip for you.

Gareth Veal and Sue Burchill – cancer researchers working at the Newcastle University Centre for Cancer and Leeds St James’s University Hospital, respectively – are embarking on a 105-mile bike ride from St James’ Park, home of Newcastle United, to Elland Road, home of Leeds United on Saturday 06 July 2024, to raise money for Children’s Cancer North and Yorkshire-based children’s cancer charity, Candlelighters.

They’re on the look out for other cyclists to join them on this epic adventure from one iconic football ground to another – all in the aid of two very special charities.

Gareth said: “As a research group we’ve done a number of challenges over the years to raise money for cancer research – everything from the Three Peaks Challenge to the Great North Run – and cycling has become a more recent passion. For this challenge we thought it would be really nice to open it up to people that want to join us in supporting both regional charities.”

“I’ve worked within cancer research in Newcastle for more than 20 years and I can’t think of an area where there is more need. Every day we’re conducting research to help guide treatment for babies, children, and young people with cancer. It’s one of the most challenging things that anybody could possibly face.”

“Both Children’s Cancer North and Candlelighters are long running paediatric charities in the North, and we thought that completing this challenge would be a great way of linking up both charities in a day of fundraising.”

If you’d like to take part in the Newcastle to Leeds charity bike ride for childhood cancer, all Gareth and Sue ask is for a £20 initial donation and the aim to raise a minimum of a further £200. All the money raised from the charity bike ride will be split equally between both charities.

Riders are invited to join an optional team social at Full Circle Taproom in Newcastle on Friday 05 July, before meeting on Saturday morning to fuel up with a team breakfast.

After setting off from St James’ Park at 9am, you can celebrate your arrival at Elland Road – home of Leeds United – with an optional team dinner and social at Northern Monk Refectory in Leeds in the evening.

And best of all, you’ll also get a free Children’s Cancer North / Candlelighters cycling jersey or t-shirt! Along the route there’ll be plenty of refreshments and cycling support if needed.

If you’re up for the challenge, you can find out more and sign up to take part by visiting the official eventbrite page.
