The 800-year-old tradition of Lord Mayors in Newcastle continues with the appointment of councillor Ian Graham.

The Liberal Democrat councillor takes over the chains from George Pattison, while Labour’s Hazel Stephenson takes on a new role as deputy mayor.

At a ceremony held at Newcastle Civic Centre in front of 100 guests, Councillor Graham was officially sworn into his new role.

The Lord Mayor has selected North of England Children’s Cancer Research as one of three charities support while in office. Since 1979, the NECCR has raised over £30 million to fund Children’s Cancer Research at Newcastle University.

The Lord Mayor said, ‘I promise to do everything within my powers to best represent the people of Newcastle as the first citizen of the city; and with the Lady Mayoress by my side it will be a very proud and momentous year for our whole family.’
