We’ve been working on something very special behind the scenes, and now we’re just days away from this year’s Children’s Cancer Run, we can announce the exciting news.

The award-winning Northumberland-based gelato ice cream company, Ciccarelli Artisan Gelato, has created a new ice cream flavour for Children’s Cancer North, and we’re going to launching it at this year’s Children’s Cancer Run. Inspired by a flavour designed by a childhood cancer patient at the Great North Children’s Hospital, the new ‘Orange Biscuit Crunch’ gelato will officially go on sale at this year’s Children’s Cancer Run, which takes place this Sunday (19 May) at Newcastle Racecourse.

The amazing team at Ciccarelli Artisan Gelato have also pledged to donate a proportion of all sales of the new ice cream to Children’s Cancer North.

“In 2023 we formed an exciting new charity partnership with the team at Ciccarelli Artisan Gelato, and one of the first ideas we all had was to create our very own Children’s Cancer North ice cream.

“Who better to design our new flavour than the inspiring children and young people we help support at the Great North Children’s Hospital. There were so many inventive flavour creations to choose from it was difficult to pick a winner, but one entry really stood out for its burst of orange that matches the charity brand colour of Children’s Cancer North.”
Abigail Hewison, Head of Charity at Children’s Cancer North

Ciccarelli Artisan Gelato, which is based in Blyth, began supporting Children’s Cancer North in 2023. The much-loved ice cream company will feature the Children’s Cancer North logo on all its tubs, highlight our charity’s cause within the North East through sales from its ice cream vans in the region. They will also attend all of our future events, including the Children’s Cancer Run.

“We’re incredibly proud to support Children’s Cancer North and help raise awareness of the amazing work the charity does.

“By donating a proportion of all sales of the new ice cream to the charity we’re joining hundreds of other supporters in helping fund world-leading cancer research to make treatments less harsh and more effective for patients. We’re also ensuring Children’s Cancer North can continue to provide children and families from across the North East and Cumbria with the support they need both on and off the hospital wards.”

Pupils from Rockcliffe First School in Whitley Bay were the first people to try the new Children’s Cancer North ice cream flavour. The school and its pupils were awarded the Sandy Weir Memorial Trophy in 2023 in recognition of their support for Children’s Cancer North and the Children’s Cancer Run. Rockcliffe First School has supported the run since 2014 through The Good Will Cause, and pupils, families and staff will be part of the thousands of runners and spectators taking part in this year’s event.

The Children’s Cancer Run at Newcastle Racecourse is now in its 41st year. Our annual cross country fun run, and accompanying Children’s Cancer Run At School programme, is the UK’s biggest single charity fun run; attracting more than 10,000 runners and spectators every year and raising millions of pounds to make life better for children with cancer in the North East and Cumbria.

All the sponsorship money you donate is used by Children’s Cancer North to support patients and families on wards 4 and 14 of the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle. We’re also able to invest in world-leading research at Newcastle University that improves the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in children and young people locally and internationally. And through the Children’s Cancer Run and other events and fundraising, you help us raise awareness of the disease; so more people understand its impact on young people and their families.

If you’ve not already signed up for this year’s Children’s Cancer Run and would like to join us this coming Sunday, you can book your place online up to midnight on Wednesday 15 May. You can then register in person at Newcastle Racecourse on Saturday 18 May (10:00 – 12noon) and Sunday 19 May (from 9am).

Come and enjoy a Children’s Cancer North ice cream with us, and 10,000 of our amazing supporters!
