Local legend, Alan Shearer will launch the Children’s Cancer Run next month, this is the 30th year of our popular Newcastle Fun Run which raises funds for Children’s Cancer Research.
While officially starting the countdown to Europe’s largest fun run which will take place Sunday 13th May at Gosforth Park, the footballing hero will also be awarded with a medal and t-shirt from last year’s event by children currently being cared for on the Children’s Cancer ward at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Also in attendance will be local funny man Brendan Healey, who has also shown great support for the run and the work it’s fundraising supports in the past.
The children’s ward is significantly funded by the North East Children’s Cancer Research (NECCR) fund and all proceeds raised at the Children’s Cancer Run go directly to the fund each year.
Chairman of the run, Chris Peacock explained that the event is going from strength to strength each year, with proceeds going towards making significant advances into Children’s cancer research and care.
He continued, “We have a great time at the run each year raising money for an incredibly important cause and last year we had almost 10,000 runners taking part. This year is our 30th anniversary and because of this we’d like to make it extra special. Having such high profile support from Alan Shearer is very helpful and I can’t thank him enough for taking the time to launch the run again this year.”
This is the second consecutive year that Alan Shearer will launch the run.
He commented, “I’m proud to have been asked to launch the Children’s Cancer Run once again this year. The money raised for the NECCR is vitally important not only for children in the North East, but across the world. The more people that take part in the run, the more research into cures and medication for childhood cancer can be undertaken. Without the run the research simply could not be carried out at the level it is.
“I’d like to encourage as many people as possible to take part in this fantastic event. The amount raised every year is a credit to the people of the region.”
The launch will take place on Monday 13th February 2012 at Complete Football, Gosforth Park, officially starting the countdown to the 2012 run which is taking place on Sunday 13th May. It is also to celebrate the continued success of the run, and the money raised so far for the NECCR fund.
