It is with great regret that the NECCR have taken the difficult decision to postpone the Children’s Cancer Run for the 2nd time this year and move it back to our ‘normal time of year’ next year – to Sunday 23rd May 2021.
With many other key regional and national sporting events being cancelled in September, and much uncertainty still created by COVID-19, it is in the best interests of all participants, volunteers, supporters, staff and all other stakeholders that we have made this decision.
All pre-registered runners will have their entry place moved to this new date, and have been contacted today.
We rescheduled the run from its original date earlier this year in May and had hoped the virus would have significantly subsided by now so we could safely go ahead in September. However, our event would still involve thousands of people gathering in close quarters, and require ambulance cover and key medical staff attending. We don’t feel it is appropriate to add additional pressure to NHS resources at this continually challenging time, nor increase the risk of infection.
The safety of runners is paramount, and an event like this requires over 300 staff and volunteers to provide safe levels of cover. Many of our runners and volunteers will also have children who are currently undergoing cancer treatment or have vulnerable immune systems.
We appreciate the news will be disappointing to many, with the run being a much-loved special day for families in the North East. But our main concern will always be of the safety of our 10,000 runners, supporters, staff and partners.
We do have an exciting new event under development at the moment, the Children’s Cancer Climb, which we will be launching this October.
In the meantime, there is a ‘Your Questions Answered’ document available on our website at www.childrenscancerrun.co.uk which should answer most queries about the Children’s Cancer Run. If you do have any further questions please get in touch with the team at firstname.lastname@example.org and we would be happy to help.
Thank you for your support and we wish you and your loved ones a safe and healthy few months ahead. We look forward to seeing you at the 38th Children’s Cancer Run on Sunday 23rd May 2021.
