Supporting children and families

We support families to make their cancer journey easier.

Children and young people from across the North East and Cumbria travel to the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle for their cancer treatment. Life can be very tough for these children and families, hours of gruelling treatment, worry, isolation and boredom. We aim to make life a little better for them through listening to what they need and want and then providing support.

We fund Tom Madge from AnimateCity, our resident animator working on the children’s cancer unit.

Tom works with children to create incredible animated films, providing a brilliant distraction and creative outlet for them.

My 13 year old son struggled to interact with anyone while on the ward. Each week Tom would come and see him but my son wouldn’t engage. Slowly he became more comfortable and made some fabulous creations with Tom. With Tom’s perseverance and approach he really helped my son to cope with his cancer journey. Thank you.”

We fund materials and activities to give children a better quality of life during treatment.

  • End of treatment gifts
  • Art and craft materials used by the Play Specialists
  • Christmas and other holiday decorations for the wards
  • Social outings for teenagers
  • Children’s Christmas parties

The amount of time they fill with those craft activities is amazing. They are crucial. Little boosts like the end of treatment and birthday gifts make a difference and help them get through it.” Tracy Henderson, Rebecca’s Mum

We provide support for families in the toughest of times.

  • Through offering financial help to families after a child dies, we help to ease the pressure a little during the darkest days.
  • We fund Memory Day, helping families and loved ones come together each year to remember a loved one.
  • We will be providing a Parent Pack for every family within the first few days of their child being diagnosed with cancer. Parents have told us that access to practical information in one place would really help them at a time when their world has been turned upside down.
