Funding new play staff

One of our key objectives in helping children on the wards is to put more direct funding into staff that can help.

Since 2024, we've funded a new post for a Nursery Nurse to work alongside the existing play specialists. This role is key in helping children through play provision and preparation for procedures. This allows the care of each patient to be individualised, helping to alleviate anxiety for patients.

Helping parents in their darkest days

Imagine that your child has just been diagnosed with cancer and you have to travel to a city you aren't familiar with, leaving friends and family at home. Families from across the North East and Cumbria travel to the Great North Children's Hospital in Newcastle for their cancer treatment. We have launched a fund to give each newly diagnosed family £250 to help with unforseen costs. We have also developed a Parent Pack which contains vital information about the non-medical side to life in hospital; where to park, where to eat, discounted hotels and more. You can help us fund more like this by making a donation, or becoming a regular donor.

Connecting children to clinical trials

We fund clinical trials carried out at the Great North Children's Hospital to test novel treatments for the most rare and difficult to treat cancers. Children diagnosed with cancer from this region have the unique opportunity to be connected with these trials, receiving the most advanced care without the need to travel further afield. These trials make a difference to children today, extending their lives and giving families the chance to stay together for longer.
